The XPTV Story

Beers Cheers

Like the majority of the best ideas, the initial concept for an ex-pat community TV network began with two friends conversing in a bar over a beer. About ten years have passed since then, and the technology was truly unaffordable at the time.

The majority of users were still using ADSL, and since fiber Internet was still in its infancy, upload speeds were too slow to broadcast videos over regular connections. Videophone communications at relatively low resolutions remained the only option for any type of affordable video broadcast software. Those barriers were too great for all the inebriated ideas in the world.

In order to work towards the TV channels we truly desired, X-Pat Radio (XPR1 and XPR2) was created.

Over the following few years, we kept up with developments in video streaming technology and created a system that would enable us to broadcast HD video from our own servers. We were finally able to begin test broadcasts on XPTV1 towards the end of 2019.

The COVID-19 lockdowns gave us a chance that had never been seen before. We realized that everyone else, like us, was stranded at home, begging for entertainment, In addition to that we were all bored and had nothing to do. That provided us with the impetus and time we needed to launch XPTV1, the first community music TV channel in history. We had two stations operating by the time the second round of lockdowns started in November 2020, including XPTV2, which expanded our lineup to include general entertainment programming.

Since then, we have continued to add new stations like XPTV US and XPTV UK, built this site to bring all of the stations together, and started working with other new stations like Popworld, RTV, and AroundSounds. Our next station, coming soon, will be XPTV SyTek, a science, technology, and SciFi channel. Once that station goes on air we’ll be changing the XPTV2 line-up and moving that channel more towards vintage comedy and drama, and away from its current primetime line-up of SciFi. When that happens, if you’re missing your daily dose of Stargate, Star Trek, and X-Files, just retune to the new XPTV SyTek channel.

The Big Challenge

Because we are so far ahead of the competition in IPTV broadcasting, we continue to face a number of difficulties. The majority of the technology we require is either unavailable or targeted at large, mainstream broadcasters, who also pay large, mainstream prices. To get to where we are now, we have already had to think “outside the box” and develop a large portion of our technology internally. We are now collaborating with software development partners to develop a basic broadcast automation and asset management system that is both inexpensive and easy to implement for small community stations. We will be able to advance our program scheduling as a result.

As more small IPTV stations follow our example and go online globally, the problem of content licensing is another one that truly needs attention. Since the system hasn’t been adequately updated since last century, video broadcasting still lacks ideal licensing options because it is firmly entrenched in the BBC/ITV/Videotape era. While new online licensing agreements with PRS, PPS, and MCPS have allowed community and online radio to advance, the majority of TV, movie, and video rights are still controlled by individual production companies, which only really ends up making money for copyright attorneys. Small broadcasters lose out, content creators lose out, and individuals like us wind up wasting excessive amounts of time pursuing executives from production companies who, to be honest, have better things to do and, in any case, frequently lack the knowledge about the vintage programming we wish to screen.
